ÇEKİMECE is a project aimed at reducing educational inequality in some rural schools in Bursa, Turkey, by providing various services with the help of volunteer participants. The project is carried out by educational institutions in collaboration with volunteer students, parents, teachers, and ÇEK partners in order to maintain and spread the culture of collective work. Participants take on the task of sharing their knowledge and educational resources with the designated rural schools. Activities such as drama, music, storytelling, creative writing and reading, handicrafts, cookie making, game workshops, and more are conducted with primary school students in the villages. In addition, the project also communicates with the local villagers and takes into account their needs regarding the school and students, as much as possible. The project has fulfilled various needs of the schools such as landscaping, gardening, painting, and establishing a library. The project continues every year by adding a new village to the previous ones. The activities and workshops conducted in the participating rural primary schools are carried out through volunteer trainers. At the same time, one of the aims of the project is to remind the students, teachers, and parents about the culture of collective work and to support them in doing good things together. Currently, the project is active in 11 villages.
Since 2015-16, 11 villages have been visited, their school deficiences have been identified and resolved and various creative drama, ceramics, fun science and math, creative writing and reading, handicrafts, cookie making, game workshops, handcraft, and attention workshops have been organized by volunteer trainers. The project has grown rapidly and has been featured in local and national media. Recently, with increasing demands, stationery needs for more than 10,000 children throughout the country have been fulfilled by the project. The ÇEKİMECE Project has been awarded the Education Award by the Bursa Branch of the Contemporary Journalists Association, the Service Award by the Bursa Chamber of Medicine, and the Difference Makers Award by the Bursa Local Agenda.
